Oh dear, I have been pushing the envelope quite a bit here haven’t I. In my previous posts on scheduled and timed juicing sessions, cleanses or fasts, pick the term that seems most arduous or appealing to you, I may have been discouraging some of you from embarking on a juice detoxification program. But my motivations have been quite correct so far. Those who are ill or weak should not be participating on such a program which, in essence, is still a noble one. So, today, while outlining for healthier men and women what the 60 day juice fast entails, I’ll be endeavoring to dig a little deeper into the reasons why some of you won’t be embarking on this magnanimous program any day soon.
ONE LAST TIME, LET’S TALK ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE ILL
Those who are seriously ill do not need to take part in such a taxing fast. They are already under prescribed medication. Perhaps there are those among the terminally ill who have already embarked on the natural alternatives to clinically prescribed conventions which always seem to carry with it harmful side effects. Those who have experienced trauma as a result of a serious accident which required surgery will not be taking part in such a marathon fast. For them, protein-enrichment in order to build and strengthen tissues and muscles will be a priority.
BUT THE POSITIVE BENEFITS OF A LONG JUICE FAST ARE
The benefits of embarking on a 10 or 30 day juice fast, and now the sixty day fast, will remain exponential for regular adherents who make it a habit during their lifetimes to partake in such a fast once or twice a year, depending on the period, their own psychological and physiological capabilities and lifestyle orientations. Over and above the physical health benefits, a long fast of this magnitude stimulates the creation of sharper, more focused minds. It foments positive affirmations, always finding solutions during times of adversity.
When you embark on a sixty day fast, living entirely on fruit and vegetable juice, think about doing it for more than the two obvious reasons. Your main reason may be to want to lose weight. Looking forward to the future, you might also be aiming towards becoming a healthier and well-rounded individual. See your biggest goal, and challenge, if you like, as a spiritual one. Compare this motivation to the religious of this world who make it a regular or annual habit to fast. Here, we need not go into depth why others fast solely for spiritual or religious reasons, except to say that the human fast strengthens the being psychologically.
IMPORTANT THINGS TO DO BEFORE STARTING
Purely for motivational and inspirational reasons, I found myself flipping through a compendium of detox juice recipes. This also allowed me to get the hang of things and spur me on for what was to come. I found myself being inspired creatively by discovering new things in any event. Such was the case with these recipes. If you’re going to use the internet, I’d recommend downloading a couple of PDFs because many websites can be quite taxing to work through, vacuous in their lack of written inspiration and very short instructions on how to work through a recipe. I have those in mind who aren’t too familiar with cooking and recipe books at this stage. But really, once upon a time, I decided that if I could read, then surely I could learn to read a recipe book.
That being said, long before you embark on the 10, 30 and 60 day juice fasts, collect a batch of recipes. Go for taste and also go for what you instinctively believe your body needs at this point in time. Otherwise, do make sure that you’ve been to the doctor to make sure that you are fit enough to partake in such a lengthy juicing diet. If time and a good medical plan allows for this, you can also have tests done to see whether your body has a deficiency of certain key minerals and vitamins. You could also work with a nutritionist who also happens to be a fan of the juicing revolution.
OFF THE GROCERY LIST
The next bit of information is essential for your pre-fasting preparations. Yes, once you’ve gone through your detox recipes and been suitably inspired as to which ones to use, you’ll have a quite a shopping list. But you also need to be mindful of how long your ingredients will keep and how long your prepared juices will last once stored in the refrigerator. This will help you plan your regular grocery shopping expeditions.
This time around, mind you, you’ll also be having a good look at what not to put on your shopping list. If you like a juicy steak every now and then, scratch that from your grocery list. If you’re a coffee addict like I used to be, you’d better get used to the idea of no more visits to your favorite coffee shop. No more nice sandwiches at lunchtime for you either. In fact, all dairy products and processed foods will now be stricken from your regular shopping list.
ALL THAT IS NEEDED TO START
Just to get started in the kitchen is easy enough. To go along with your spanking new juicer (ideally one that is both centrifugal and masticating) you’ll need a sieve and jugs. You’ll need your chopping and peeling knife too, of course. And finally, you’ll need a few airtight bottles or recycled (also airtight) plastic containers to store your juice in.
And there you go. Now, that wasn’t so hard, was it?
